Although you might use a smartphone to dim LED lighting at home, the researchers took this further by creating a simple lighting system for 3D imaging using dynamically controlled LEDs.

Current video surveillance systems (such as those used for public transportation) rely on cameras that only provide 2D information. This new method can be used to illuminate different indoor areas to better monitor 3D images, create smart workspaces in factories, or enable robots to have a more comprehensive understanding of the environment.

In the "Optical Letters" of the Optical Association (OSA), researchers demonstrated that 3D optical imaging can be performed with mobile phones and LEDs without any complicated manual processes to synchronize the camera with the lighting.
